Want to shadow me or catch me at one of the panels at SxSW. Want to know what you’ll be watching here at the site?
Here are the panels I plan on attending.
Friday: Minority Report is Real
Sci-fi movies have long-celebrated beautiful, tangible, and immersive computer interfaces. Explore the interplay between fanciful Hollywood productions, one-off information visualizations, and useful real-world applications.
Ben Rigby Mobile Voter
Barrett Fox Creative Dir, COCO Studios
What I hope to get out of it: Robots are the coolest thing ever. That’s why I blog about them. I’m a futurist through and through, and of the many scifi movies over the years to come out, the one future we’ll likely see first continues to be Minority Report. This is pure info pr0n for me, but I’m going to enjoy it, damnit.
The Ecosystem of News It is now conventional wisdom that the newspaper as we have come to know it for last century is over, or will be in a matter of years. The question is whether we're going to spend our time grieving over the loss, or whether we're going to use this moment as an opportunity to invent something even better. We're inevitably moving from the "paper of record" model to a something more distributed, a news ecosystem, but that doesn't mean we can't consciously define the shape of that system. So let's figure out what values we want to preserve from the older newspaper paradigm, and what values we want to improve upon -- and then let's go build it!
Steven Johnson outside.in
What I hope to get out of it: I’ve spoken to the folks at outside.in, and they seem to have their head on straight about the role of New Media, and their role within that role. I’d like to see how their viewpoints have evolved in the six months or so it’s been since we spoke.
Government 2.0 Podcast
Leo Laporte, Robert Scoble, and Marc Canter will be talking about the state of Government 2.0 on the main SXSW live stream.
What I hope to get out of it: As long as they keep from talking about partisanship and the mechanics of campaigning, this will be less of an amusing discourse and more educational on how technology could be realistically applied to government.
Saturday:
IM Video Journalism With video online all the rage, UK-based international award winning video journalist David Dunkley Gyimah deconstructs video journalism and posits his cinematic brand known as IMVJ. Described by Apple Pro as a one man hurricane http://www.apple.com/uk/pro/profiles/gyimah/ Ex BBC David talks technique, workflow, and swift turnaround factual feature making.
What I hope to get out of it: Obviously, the topic of New Media journalism is something we frequently converse about here at the site, and I’m always interested in how the bleeding edge folks are doing it and making it work.

What I hope to get out of it: I’ll be honest, the first thing that caught my eye was the View Askew thing. I’m a Kevin Smith fanboy, and I’d like to get an industry insider’s view on where they think webisodes are going as a creative and business proposition.

At Zappos.com, Tony Hsieh has fostered a culture where extraordinary customer service is the norm. Hear him talk about how good deeds can help you leverage the power of your audience to massively extend your brand. Tony Hsieh CEO, Zappos.com
What I hope to get out of it: It’s Zappos. Interesting conversations can always be held about these guys.

Monday:
The Invisible Web and Ubiquitous Computing
Cost of technology, falling. Speed of wireless networks , growing. Availability of network services, everywhere. Compartmentalization of data, and micro-functionality (widgets, apps), increasing. In the not-too-distant future, the network will surround us in our daily lives; it will know about us, interact with us, and it will be invisible.
Patrick Moorhead Dir Emerging Media, Razorfish
David Polinchock Brand Experience Lab
What I hope to get out of it: I’ll be honest… I picked this one up so I could evoke some contrary opinions from Steven Hodson.
The Future of the DVD and Digital Distribution
Filmmakers are increasingly relying on revenues from DVD sales and digital downloads, as a supplement to (or instead of) theatrical ticket sales. But how long will physical DVD sales remain a viable business (and will Blu-ray help prolong their lifespan)? How are filmmakers selling digital downloads and rentals on iTunes and other outlets, and how do digital revenues stack up? Are there models for making money from free peer-to-peer distribution? Our panel of filmmakers, techies, and distributors will outline the best practices for making the most from the established DVD sales channel and the emerging digital channel.
Scott Kirsner Editor, CinemaTech
Rick Allen CEO, Snag Films
Matt Dentler Cinetic Media
Joe Swanberg Nights and Weekends
Gary Hustwit Director, Objectified
Steve Savage Pres, New Video

What I hope to get out of it: It seemed like there was an all star lineup given the topic here. I really admire how Netflix has developed as a company, and their forward thinking attitude towards streaming media. I want to hear what other thoughts come from this panel.

Tuesday: Quality: The Next Online Video Opportunity
The days of postage-sized, stuttering, 4X3 videos are over. More content is available online than ever before which only means that consumers are also demanding better quality than ever before. Quality, not convenience, will be the new opportunity for online video and new technologies, user experience innovations and obsession over every pixel will be what separates the leaders from the followers.
Eric Feng CTO, Hulu LLC
What I hope to get out of it: I like the premise of this panel, but that it’s run by someone from Hulu makes me pre-emptively defensive. I’ve been anti-Hulu since the beginning, and continue to be anti-Hulu, since it continues to represent and overall strategy that’s counter to what’s beneficial to the larger ecology of online video. Essentially, this’ll be a stress test for me to see if I can take it.
